San Francisco 49ers In Search Of a New Backup Quarterback
The San Francisco 49ers have spent the majority of the 2024 offseason making upgrades to their already impressive defense; trading for Maliek Collins and signing former All-Pro linebacker, DeVondre Campbell, and Super Bowl Champion edge rusher, Leonard Floyd, to free agent deals.
However, after losing Sam Darnold to the Minnesota Vikings, where he will opportunity to start for a team that is trying to figure out how their franchise will look post-Kirk Cousins, the 49ers have a hole at backup quarterback behind starter, Brock Purdy.
Whilst the team did re sign 3rd QB, Brandon Allen, questions remain about how viable he is as a full time backup quarterback. And in the light of the aptly named “Brock Purdy Rule” that allows NFL teams to carry a 3rd emergency signal caller on gamedays, many teams, particularly the Niners, are opting to have 3 QBs on their roster.
And now it looks as if the final position has likely been filled, as the San Francisco 49ers are bringing in former Vikings and Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Joshua Dobbs, per Mike Garofolo.
Josh Dobbs had an electric start to his Vikings career, coming in against the Atlanta Falcons and beating them 31-28, then completing the NFC South double in a big 27-19 win against the New Orleans Saints.
However, he was benched for Jaren Hall after a 4 interception game against the Chicago Bears, and failed to make much of an in impact for the rest of the season as Minnesota missed the playoffs.
Yet, Dobbs still figures to project as a reasonably strong number 2 quarterback, especially in head coach, Kyle Shanahan’s uber friendly offensive, run-first scheme.
The one thing the Niners know is that hopefully, this is just insurance, and their main man, Brock Purdy, can stay fit for the whole season as they once again chase their first Super Bowl championship since the days of Steve Young.
