Lions News: Tackle Matt Nelson Will Require Surgery for Injured Ankle

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Matt Nelson, an unrestricted free agent, recently visited with the New York Giants, according to a report by NorthJersey.com. Nelson, 28 years old, stands 6-7 and weighs 315 pounds. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa following the 2019 draft by the Lions. After spending his rookie season on the Lions practice squad, he made the 53-man roster the following year. Nelson has appeared in 43 games with 14 starts over his career, playing the bulk of his snaps at right tackle. In 639 career pass-blocking snaps, He has allowed 52 quarterback pressures for a 95.3 pass-blocking efficiency rating

 

Last season, he appeared in three games for the Lions with two starts before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Holmes saw an extended role in his rookie season, playing in 12 games, starting five, and had 30 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one interception, five pass deflections, and one fumble recovery in 442 snaps. He allowed 33 receptions on 44 targets for 323 yards and an 85.7 passer rating. He missed four games because of a neck and knee injury.

Holmes saw less playing time in his second season, playing in 11 games, starting four, and had 29 tackles, one interception, and two pass deflections in 281 snaps. He allowed 22 receptions on 33 targets for 213 yards and a 71.9 passer rating. He suffered a fractured rib in Week 12 and missed the rest of the season.

Holmes saw the most amount of playing time in his third season, playing in 15 games, starting twice, and had 38 tackles, two for a loss, eight pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 572 snaps. He allowed 41 receptions on 67 targets for 435 yards, one touchdown, and an 85.1 passer rating.

Holmes took a pay cut and saw the least amount of playing time in his fourth season, playing in 16 games and had 18 tackles, one for a loss, two interceptions, three pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 123 sn
