Sam Greenwood of Middlesbrough left ‘buzzing’ after realizing his childhood dream of playing for Sunderland.

Sam Greenwood’s childhood fantasy of playing and scoring at the Stadium of Light most likely didn’t resemble the real thing on Saturday.

Greenwood came through Sunderland’s youth academy and was a fan since his childhood. But Greenwood’s career ultimately took a different turn when, at the age of 16, Arsenal called. That meant he was making his Stadium of Light debut as a senior on Saturday night at the Wear-Tees derby. But instead of playing for his boyhood team, he was playing against them while on loan at Middlesbrough from Leeds.

The adaptable attacker vowed to fight for Boro and act professionally before the match. That proved to be the case as he scored his first goal on his debut at Sunderland’s stadium, giving Boro the lead and putting them on track for their biggest-ever victory away on Wearside. Though he didn’t go all out, Greenwood acknowledged that it was an odd experience.

After the game, he spoke to Sky Sports, saying, “To be honest, it felt a little strange, but I’m just glad we got the three points and we can keep pushing now.” It was astounding. Walking out at the Stadium of Light has always been a goal of mine, but I’ve done it now and scored against them! Frankly, I find it hard to believe. The boys gave a polished performance, and I’m thrilled with the outcome.”

Prior to the match, the Boro loan player disclosed that he had secured a ticket for his father in the away end for Boro supporters. Greenwood stated his father would be rooting for him, despite the fact he actually supports Sunderland.
