Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ jersey numbers are revealed following trade.
There may not be much longer to wait for those who have been excitedly awaiting the unveiling of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys.
Fields will wear No. 5 in the black and yellow uniform, while Wilson will wear his customary No. 3 with the Steelers, according to David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 in Chicago (which begins at 2:35).
Wilson’s number was expected because he had previously posted a video of himself opening several No. 3 Steelers jerseys with his last name after joining the team.
Throughout his professional career, Wilson has worn the No. 3 jersey. In college, he wore the No. 16 at Wisconsin and North Carolina State, but he changed it up when he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Since his days as a football player in Kennesaw, Georgia, high school, Fields has used the No. 1. He kept it after moving to Ohio State in 2019 and during his one and only season at the University of Georgia in 2018.
It seems that the Steelers are picky about which numbers they assign. George Pickens, a wide receiver, spoke on the Arthur Moats Experience with Deke podcast. (via Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora) He attempted to obtain the No. 1 in December 2022, but the club turned him down because “I think it’s sacred or something like that.”
In the history of the Steelers, only four players have ever worn the No. 1 jersey during a game. The last person to utilize it was kicker Gary Anderson, who did so from 1982 to 1994.
The last player on the roster to wear the number is Anthony Wright, an undrafted rookie in 1999 who started as the team’s fourth-string quarterback. In his one and only season with the team, he did not play in a single game.
