Similar to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid has been acquiring free agents in recent years, and two seasons from now, Los Colchoneros will be adding one of the Blaugrana’s free agents. The most recent news out of the Spanish capital claims that left-back Marcos Alonso has an agreement to join Atletico.
It was decided not to extend Alonso’s contract this summer, and he will be free to leave, according to Fabrizio Romano. In a similar vein, captain Sergi Roberto may also be leaving, however, unlike Alonso, this decision is not final.
According to Cadena SER, the 33-year-old former Chelsea defender has a deal in place to join Atletico. The terms of a contract have been agreed upon, even though they state that the agreement is not final and that things could change based on what other offers or possibilities arise for both parties.
Alonso was expected to be Alejandro Balde’s backup left back this season after serving as a rotational option in central defense last season. However, an injury that required surgery and kept the veteran defender out for more than three months has limited Alonso’s playing time this season. With his most recent appearance being in early November, he has only made 7 appearances this season for a total of 299 minutes.
