George Russell Damand Rule revisions, bringing Lewis Hamiltion.
Following the Australian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso received a 20-second time penalty for his defensive strategy against George Russell.
George Russell has cautioned that if Fernando Alonso is not penalized at the Australian Grand Prix, Formula 1 could be opening “a can of worms.”
Chasing Alonso for sixth place, Russell had an accident on the penultimate lap of the race at Melbourne’s Albert Park.
When they got close to Turn 6, Alonso let off the accelerator and the Mercedes driver lost control of his vehicle.
“As I said at the time, [I was] totally caught by surprise,” Russell told the media, including RacingNews365. “I was actually looking at the steering wheel, making a switch change in the straight, which we all do across the lap, and when I looked up, I was in Fernando’s gearbox. “It was too late and then the next thing I know, I’m in the wall.” Alonso was found guilty of dangerous driving and was shuffled down the final classification.
“Can of worms”
Russell said that if Alonso had not received a penalty, it would have been easier for other drivers to pull off similar maneuvers in the future.
Russell continued, “I believe that it would have really opened a can of worms for the rest of the season if it had not been penalized.”
“And in younger divisions, asking if it’s acceptable to break in a straight? Is it okay for you to accelerate, shift into a lower gear, slow down, or act somewhat erratically?
“I don’t take anything personally from what happened to Fernando, and it most likely had unwarrantedly severe repercussions.
It’s not a personal matter. We’re all competitors and fighters when the helmet is on.
You show each other respect when you take off your helmets. Thus, despite the intense feelings that are present at the time, we both move past this.
