The fullback arrived at Elland Road in 2016 after joining the team from Bristol City. But under head coach Daniel Farke this season, the 32-year-old was reduced to a squad player, and he eventually transferred to Riverside Stadium for a brief loan period.
Though their return to form came a few weeks too late, the seasoned defender has made 17 appearances in the Championship since joining Boro and has been instrumental in getting Michael Carrick’s team back on track and into the play-offs.
Ayling’s contract with Leeds United expires in two games, meaning his future could be in jeopardy if the Teesside team doesn’t place in the top six before the end of the regular season in early May.
Clubs are, however, already monitoring his circumstances with the Whites. Sheffield United, a Premier League team in danger of relegation, is reportedly hoping to recruit Ayling on a free agent after his current contract expires, according to a report by Alan Nixon on his private Patreon.
According to Nixon, Ayling is viewed as a crucial acquisition for the Blades, who will probably play in the Championship the following season after finishing with just 16 points from 33 games in the top division this year. He claims to be worth £850,000 on the market. Ayling can be a tremendous asset for a team in the Championship and is still only 32 years old. Though it may be a sad farewell for all, the fullback’s future no longer resides at Elland Road. Moving to Bramall Lane or staying at Middlesbrough permanently are both excellent choices for him.
The Englishman already has three promotions listed on his resume, so he is aware of the requirements for advancement. In their quest to make it back to the Premier League, Sheffield United and Boro could find great value in this experience the following season.
