Wife of former Alabama and Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr, Cherry Starr was a philanthropist.
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Bart Starr’s wife, philanthropist Cherry Starr, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, at her Birmingham home. Her age was ninety-nine.
The Starrs had a tight relationship with the Wisconsin faith-based non-profit group Rawhide Youth Services, which released a video tribute on Tuesday announcing her passing. For teenagers and young adults, the organization offers residential treatment, therapy, and adolescent counseling.
In a statement, Rawhide described Cherry and Bart Starr as “beautifully distinct, but from the beginning, they shared, a love for all of mankind and a deep commitment to treat everyone they met with the highest level of dignity and respect.” “After Vince Lombardi passed away, she later dedicated several decades to aiding in the fundraising efforts for cancer research. Thanks to the tremendous commitment of people in Milwaukee to support medical research and doctors in many places, this effort is still being done today through the Starr Children’s Fund.”
She died quietly at home, according to an online obituary from The Starr Children’s Fund. The reason of death was not stated.
Prior to Bart’s passing in 2019, Cherry and Bart were wed for over 60 years. He had an incredible career playing for Alabama and subsequently the Green Bay Packers. He was the MVP of Super Bowl I and II and won three NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl era. In 1977, he was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Bart Starr, Jr., three grandsons, and six great-grandchildren survive Cherry.
