Just in. Derby Championship promotion could bring €600 million to the county and…

Derby County’s promotion to the Championshi has been described as “fantastic news” for the whole city’s economy. The sound of the final whistle at Pride Park on Saturday, April 27, marked the Rams’ promotion back to the second tier of English football after a 2-0 victory over Carlisle.

This season’s success will not only benefit the city’s only professional football team moving forward but also have positive ramifications for local businesses. With the Rams playing arguably larger clubs, the number of away fans visiting the city is likely to significantly increase.

This is on top of the loyal base of match-going supporters who will continue to fill home sections of the stadium as the Rams return to the Championship after a two-year break from the second division. Scott Knowles, the chief executive of East Midlands Chamber, says the businesses in and around Pride Park, and also in the city centre, can expect a boost following the promotion from League One.

Mr Knowles said: “For Derby County to be back up in the Sky Bet Championship is just fantastic news for the club and the whole city’s wider economy. Two seasons in the third tier was too long and this promotion just goes to show the level of talent and determination at the club. I extend my warmest congratulations to all who made this happen – the players through to supporters.

Pride Park and the surrounding area can expect a healthy economic boost as more away fans come in and hospitality and hotel occupancy grow to meet demand. Across the whole of Derby, there’s then the feelgood factor that we know positively impacts spending. Being back in the Championship gets the club and city even more prominence across the country and overseas.”
