That extends to the academy, which has been led by its head Richard Stevens and guided by various staff including under 21s boss Richard Beale and under 18s’ professional development phase coach Leigh Downing. Albion have had a series of self-generated success stories in recent years, and winger Tom Fellows is as exciting as any of those produced talents which have preceded him.
While all areas of the club were neglected by previous incumbent Guochuan Lai, the hope is that, in turn, Patel’s introduction will mean more investment and security at the foundations of the club, where staff work hard with young prospects in the hope that they can eventually establish themselves in the Albion first-team. For Beale, who briefly took interim charge of Albion’s first team before Corberan arrived last year, it’s exciting.
“I met the new guys when they got a tour around the training ground, it was nice to speak to Shilen and the other guys involved. It was only very brief and fleeting, but everyone’s very happy of course,” he said. “It’s a fantastic platform to build from and go forward now, especially off the back of what the first team are doing.
“Everything feels great and is geared up for this club to get back in the Premier League, which will be fantastic. If me and the other academy staff can help in any way, shape or form then we are happy to do so. I’m sure the new ownership will want to invest in all parts of the club and we are all looking forward to that. It’s a big boost to have them on board, we can look to a rosy future and a platform to build from.”
