Unfortunately for Newcastle United, Celtic now appears likely to sign a replacement for Joe Hart.
Newcastle United—or, as they should now be called, Goalkeeper United—may soon hear some unfavorable news from over the border.
Eddie Howe signed a new contract for Mark Gillespie and strangely brought in experienced goalkeeper John Ruddy and Nottingham Forest disaster Odysseas Vlachodimos after pursuing Euro 2024 sensation Giorgi Mamardashvili and teenage England goalkeeper James Trafford.
With Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka remaining on the roster, Newcastle now has five possible first-team goalkeepers, even if Loris Karius left the Club before his contract expired.
Not satisfied with that, either, there are reports that Newcastle is still planning to pursue signing James Trafford this summer. If that happens, our feeling is that Burnley will receive a season-long loan of Trafford.
It appears that Martin Dubravka’s deal to Celtic is off.
Even though it appeared that Martin Dubravka would be leaving St. James’ Park for Celtic during Euro 2024, the transfer currently appears to be falling through.
Celtic needed a replacement after Joe Hart hung up his boots, and Dubravka appeared to be their top pick.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, it appears such is no longer the case with Kasper.
This week, Schmeichel will have a medical examination at Celtic.
There are much too many goalkeepers for Newcastle.
Dubravka will likely be sold this summer, and there is still plenty of time to find him a new club, but for the time being, that one spot is quite crowded.
Other than the fact that Nick Pope will probably start at number one and Vlachodimos at number two, we’re still unsure about how the goalkeepers will be arranged moving forward. Who knows about Gillespie and Ruddy?
We will be totally perplexed if Newcastle manages to sign James Trafford and decides not to loan him back to Burnley.
