Eels Continue Staff Overhaul: Head of Performance to Join Rivals, Uncertainty Surrounds Key Players
As the Parramatta Eels undergo a significant shake-up under their new head coach, Jason Ryles, recent reports indicate further changes within the club. The latest development involves Trent Elkin, the Eels’ Head of Performance, who is set to depart the club at the end of the season. Elkin will be joining the South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he is close to finalizing a deal to work alongside Wayne Bennett and his coaching staff, including assistants Ben Hornby and David Furner.
Elkin’s exit marks the latest in a series of staff changes at Parramatta. With a tenure spanning the last five seasons, Elkin has been a key figure in the Eels’ performance department. His departure is part of a broader trend of reshuffling under Ryles, who has already signaled that interim coach Trent Barrett will not be retained as an assistant beyond this season. Barrett, who worked under former coach Brad Arthur, will be leaving along with other significant adjustments to the coaching setup.
The uncertainty surrounding the Eels’ roster and coaching staff extends to several key players. Notably, back-rower Bryce Cartwright has expressed his desire to remain at Parramatta despite the lack of assurances from Ryles regarding his future. Cartwright, who rejuvenated his career under the previous coach, is uncertain about his place in the team beyond this season. He mentioned the lack of contact from Ryles but emphasized his commitment to finishing the current season strong. “I love it here and love the group,” Cartwright said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen next year, I haven’t had any contact (with Ryles). But we’re just trying to improve ourselves through these last six games.”
The Eels are also grappling with salary cap issues and the potential movement of high-profile players. Ryan Matterson, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, and Maika Sivo have been linked with moves away from Parramatta, despite being contracted for at least another year. The club’s financial and roster management will be a crucial aspect of Ryles’ strategy as he looks to reshape the team.
Meanwhile, five-eighth Dylan Brown remains a central figure in the club’s future plans. Brown, who has a contract with the Eels until the end of 2025, has an option that could extend his stay until 2031. Despite struggling with injuries and the absence of key players like Mitchell Moses, Brown’s long-term deal includes clauses that provide him with flexibility and security. Brown acknowledged the speculation around his contract and potential moves but reassured fans that the deal includes provisions in his favor. “There are clauses in there in my favour which is a positive,” Brown explained. “It was a good deal on my behalf. I know there have been some bad talks about it for the management of Parramatta, but (people shouldn’t worry).”
As the season progresses, the Parramatta Eels face a period of transition and adjustment. The club’s focus will be on navigating these changes while striving to finish the season on a high note. The uncertainty around player futures and staff changes adds to the dynamic and evolving landscape at Parramatta, with Ryles tasked with steering the team through these challenging times.
