Cooper Talks About His Commitment to Duke: “A Perfect Fit for My Future”
*Interviewer*: Cooper, first off, congratulations on committing to Duke! It’s an exciting time for you, but also for the program. What made you decide that Duke was the right place for you?
*Cooper*: Thank you! I’m honestly still processing it all. It’s been a crazy journey, but I couldn’t be more excited to be joining such a prestigious program. The decision to commit to Duke really came down to a combination of factors — the coaching staff, the academic opportunities, and, of course, the culture surrounding the basketball program. Duke has a tradition of excellence, both on the court and in the classroom, and I felt that it was the perfect place for me to grow as a player and a person.
*Interviewer*: It’s clear that Duke has a strong basketball program, and they’ve had so much success over the years. What was it about Coach K and now Coach Scheyer that made you feel confident in your decision?
*Cooper*: Coach K’s legacy speaks for itself, but Coach Scheyer really made an impression on me. I’ve had the chance to talk with him a lot throughout this process, and he’s just so genuine. He’s focused not only on winning but on developing players, helping us grow beyond basketball. He’s young, energetic, and really understands what it takes to succeed in today’s game. The way he carries the program forward, along with the support system at Duke, was a huge factor in my decision. I felt that they really believed in my potential, both as a player and as a person, and that’s something I really value.
*Interviewer*: That’s awesome. It sounds like the coaching staff and the people there are a big reason behind your choice. But Duke is also known for its rigorous academics. How important was that aspect of your decision, especially as you balance basketball and your future career?
*Cooper*: Academics were definitely a huge part of the equation. I’m excited to be part of a school that holds its students to such high standards. At Duke, I know I’ll get the support to excel not just on the court but also in the classroom. It was really important to me to find a school where I could thrive academically, as well as athletically. The opportunities I’ll have to pursue a top-tier education and set myself up for life after basketball were a big draw. I want to make sure I’m well-rounded, and Duke offers that perfect balance.
*Interviewer*: You’re coming into a program that has a rich tradition, but you’ll also be one of the new faces in the team. How do you feel about stepping into that role and representing such a storied program?
*Cooper*: It’s honestly an honor to be part of that tradition. Duke has produced so many legendary players who have gone on to have incredible careers, and I want to continue that legacy. I’m coming in with the mindset that it’s not about trying to replace anyone, but about contributing to the team in my own way. I want to work hard, learn from the older guys, and bring what I can to the table. There’s a lot of pressure, but I’m excited for the challenge.
*Interviewer*: Lastly, looking ahead, what are your goals for your first season at Duke?
*Cooper*: I think it all comes down to contributing to the team’s success. I want to help us compete for a championship, whether that’s the ACC title or making a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Personally, I’m focused on improving my game, getting stronger, and becoming a better all-around player. I know the competition is going to be tough, but I’m ready to put in the work and do whatever it takes to help the team. I’m also excited to experience the atmosphere at Cameron Indoor — I’ve heard it’s one of the best in college basketball.
*Interviewer*: That’s a great mindset, Cooper. We’re all looking forward to seeing you play at Duke. Best of luck with your journey ahead, and thanks for taking the time to chat with us!
*Cooper*: Thank you! I appreciate it. I’m excited to get started!
