Swing Trade Landing QB: “This Year’s C.J. Stroud” is the call made to Vikings.
This offseason, the Minnesota Vikings have made a number of important choices regarding who to cut and who to bring back for the following campaign. They’re going to create another now. The next historic event on the schedule is the NFL draft.
Josh McCown, the quarterbacks coach for the Vikings, has served as the team’s main representative at the several pro days where the best prospects in the class showcase their skills for a final time in front of different audiences.
There will be 30 visits after this, which may reveal a lot about the team’s genuine goals.
Jim Souhan, a columnist for the Star Tribune, believes that the Vikings will win with Jayden Daniels of LSU.
“This is how I rank quarterbacks in this draft: 1. Caleb Williams of USC; 2. Jayden Daniels of LSU; 3. J.J. McCarthy of Michigan; 4. Michael Penix Jr. of Washington; 5. Drake Maye of North Carolina; and 6. Bo Nix of Oregon, according to a March 30 note from Souhan.
“The Vikings will win if they can sign McCarthy. The Vikings should make every effort to trade up and select Daniels if the elite teams are stupid enough to pass him over or not select him. Compared to Williams, he is more gifted and less of a mystery. He might be the C.J. Stroud of this year.
There were discussions about Stroud’s season being the greatest in NFL history.
During the previous season, the former No. 2 overall choice of the Houston Texans completed 63.9% of his throws for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
He became the first rookie quarterback, according to Stathead, to toss at least 20 touchdowns and five or fewer interceptions, along with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 overall choice in 2012.
If the Vikings brass is convinced Daniels can do that, it would be worth making a deal.
In order to win the Heisman Trophy last season, Daniels completed 72.2% of his throws for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns with four interceptions.
As Justin Jefferson enters a contract year, some in the Vikings organization feel a connection to Daniels and want to pair him with him, according to ESPN’s Dan Graziano on February 10.
Following Daniels’ pro day, they had a private meeting scheduled, according to NFL In an apparent slip of the tongue, LSU head coach Brian Kelly said that Daniels will be playing for the Washington Commanders on the Tigers’ pro day, attempting to allay worries about the quarterback’s small stature.
With the second overall pick, Washington’s plans are just as murky as those of any other team.
Following the widespread distribution of images of Daniels’ elbow, worries about him increased. He played down the worry, but he could not rule out a possible medical issue.
After evaluating the Vikings’ other offseason moves with conflicting emotions, Souhan made his recommendation regarding Daniels. Letting Kirk Cousins go in free agency to join the Atlanta Falcons was at the top of the list.
For less than the Texans will pay Hunter in 2024, the Vikings signed three players: Andrew Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, and Jonathan Greenard. Additionally, they used free agency to steal Cashman and Greenard from the Texans.
Souhan supported the Vikings’ attempts to re-sign Jefferson, who with his next contract could completely reset the non-quarterback market.
He also said it was a benefit that Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator, stayed put.
It all comes down to the quarterback situation for the Vikings, where head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, according to Souhan, are headed toward a decision that may either land them new contracts or result in their termination.
