Every year, positions of strength appear differently, which eventually influences the draft tactics that the 32 teams will employ in the process of choosing players.
The 49ers’ newest defensive lineman: Five Things to Know
The 49ers used much of their free agency resources to rebuild their defensive line, therefore the 2018 season will see a change in the appearance of San Francisco’s front four.
Arik Armstead, Chase Young, Clelin Ferrell, Javon Kinlaw, and Sebastian Joseph-Day were among the defensive lineman who left the team at the start of the 2017 league season. Four new players were also signed. The team decided to add Jordan Elliott, Yetur Gross-Matos, Leonard Floyd, and re-sign veteran Kevin Givens, who had served five years. Earlier in February, the 49ers also signed free agents Earnest Brown IV and Raymond Johnson III.

As we saw over the course of the last few weeks, the San Francisco 49ers were incredibly active in the free agent market, adding 11 new players to the roster since the start of the new league year along with a number of extensions and re-signings. A majority of the new acquisitions came on the defensive side of the ball, with a special emphasis on the front seven, but San Francisco did also round out its quarterback room and bolster the offensive line.

These first two weeks of free agency have seen a number of players come and leave from the San Francisco 49ers. Oren Burks, a seventh-year professional, is one of the athletes starting a fresh chapter in their careers somewhere else. After joining the red and gold at the end of the 2021 season, the linebacker played for a few years. He signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles last week.
