The experienced midfielder Howson is currently without a contract at the end of the current campaign and is awaiting word on whether he will receive an extension offer.
As the current season approaches its conclusion, many players are still unaware of what is ahead for them in the near future.

Up until recent weeks, the 2023–24 campaign had been very unpleasant for Middlesbrough supporters despite the team’s success in the previous season. However, even with Michael Carrick’s team experiencing a run of form, finishing in the top six seems unattainable with a few weeks left in the campaign.

The former Manchester United midfielder can now devote some time to forward planning for the upcoming campaign, when Boro supporters can only hope that a play-off push is sustained throughout the course of the Championship’s 46 regular season games.

The circumstance involving Jonny Howson at Riverside Stadium
There aren’t many players on the current roster whose future at Riverside Stadium is still up in the air, unlike some other teams in the division.

The seasoned central midfielder Jonny Howson, who has lived in the North East since joining from Norwich City for an estimated £6 million fee back in 2017 under Garry Monk’s management, is the only member of the team still playing from that era in the club’s history, alongside Jamie Jones, Liam Roberts, and Paddy McNair.

As the team looks to end their Premier League sabbatical, Howson has been a constant in the lineup under numerous managers, amassing over 300 appearances.

Despite spending so much time with the team, the 35-year-old has committed to two one-year rolling contract extensions in the past two years, with the final two taking effect in 2022 and 2023.

Since he has played in 35 Championship games this season and continues to provide excellent leadership and poise to the team alongside the young Hayden Hackney in central midfield, his contract is up again in two months. There has been conjecture regarding whether Carrick will extend the veteran’s contract.

Jonny Howson takes a positive approach regarding his future with Middlesbrough FC.
It is to be expected that Howson has been questioned about his intentions to play for Middlesbrough for one more season.

The midfield player was keen to bring up his prior experience with this circumstance when speaking on the official EFL podcast earlier this week.

“I suppose I shouldn’t respond to it. Howson remarked, “You’ll have to ask above me.

“I would definitely like to stay. It’s odd because the last two or three seasons have been pretty similar in that we get to this point in the season and then (I sign another contract),” Howson said.

Therefore, nothing about myself is new. I’m not too worried about it, and it would be fantastic if I could stay another season. If not, that’s just a fact of life in football. I’ll hunt down another group.

“You do be caught off guard when you witness certain things that happen in football when you are a little younger. Nothing surprises you when you reach this age and have witnessed certain things occur.”

Whether or whether Howson’s tenure at the Riverside ends in the next few weeks, he has one regret about his time there, despite being thankful to have worn the red and white for so long.

“I want to continue for as long as possible,” the seasoned midfield player said.

“I have some wonderful recollections. I came here hoping to get promoted, therefore the only thing that would upset me is that I haven’t succeeded in doing so. But other than that, I’ve had a great time here. We’ll find out in the next month or two, I’m sure of it,” he said.

Middlesbrough defender Jonny Howson has given Michael Carrick a toughIn the end, Carrick will have to make a lot of difficult choices in the upcoming weeks.

Without a doubt, the Boro captain has many valuable attributes, none more so than his leadership, but the club must consider other factors as well while considering their alternatives.

Capology estimates that Howson is making around £25,000 a week, which is a considerable amount of money for many second-tier teams. As a result, the club might be hesitant to acknowledge that they lost out on the £6 million trade that took place seven years ago.A choice to be made

In any case, Howson and Middlesbrough will want to finish the season strong. That starts on Monday when they play Leeds United, one of the midfielder’s old teams, who are vying for promotion.
