Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to St James’ Park, Chris Wilder has revealed Oli McBurnie has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, following a scan and a meeting with a specialist earlier this week.
James McAtee (groin) is a doubtful having limped off at Old Trafford in midweek, although Wilder is more optimistic Jayden Bogle (calf) will be fit to start in the north-east.
Despite the ever decreasing numbers, the boss is convinced his team will be competitive against the Magpies, with more youngsters from the within the Academy likely to be called into the travelling matchday squad and Wilder is confident they will be able to handle the occasion because of their upbringing.
Having been recalled to the starting XI against Manchester United, Wilder has also confirmed that Wes Foderingham will retain his place in the team and says the professionalism of the experienced stopper in recent months hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Wilder admits a trip ‘up the road’ is always one he enjoys and concluded by admitting he is full of admiration for his opposite number Eddie Howe and the way his career has progressed.
The Blades’ six-goal Premier League top-scorer injured his groin in the 4-1 defeat to Burnley, when he was captain in the absence of the injured John Egan, Chris Basham and Jack Robinson.
That he will not feature in Saturday’s game at Newcastle United – which could see their long-expected relegation from the Premier League confirmed – or the following three matches has added significance. The Leeds-born forward is out of contract in the summer, and had not been shy in making it known how much he would love to play for Rangers.
“Oli McBurnie’s out for the season,” he confirmed. “It’s a massive blow for us but it goes alongside situations we’ve had all season.
