Amidst the CeeDee Lamb contract problem, the Cowboys sign the most unimpressive wide receiver possible.
The Dallas Cowboys’ performance in the NFL Draft served as a great diversion from their lackluster offseason. Once the Cowboys sign Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to contract extensions, that might change, but it appears they’re willing to prolong both situations as long as possible.
They will compel themselves to pay the whole amount if they do that. It is anticipated that Prescott and Lamb will reset the QB and WR markets, respectively. The wide receiver market has reset twice in as many weeks, despite the fact that no quarterbacks have signed significant deals this offseason.
Initially, the Lions guaranteed Amon-Ra St. Brown $76.61 million and gave him $30.002 million annually. These were the highest numbers a recipient had ever received. A few days later, A.J. Brown and the Eagles reached an agreement on a three-year, $96 million contract that included a $84 million guarantee. In terms of guaranteed money as well as annual value ($32 million), Brown is currently the highest-paid wide receiver in the league.
The Cowboys will have to pay Lamb more the longer they put off making a move. One more drawback? Lamb is holding out for a new contract, which won’t expire until he does. Dallas is therefore lacking in receivers ahead of OTAs and minicamp. They signed a wide receiver (WR), but he doesn’t make any significant progress in that regard. With the CeeDee Lamb deal deadlocked, the Cowboys sign wide receiver Tyron Billy-Johnson.
Tyron Billy-Johnson has signed with the Cowboys, according to the Dallas Morning News. Billy-Johnson, who was first signed by Dallas in the summer of 2023, was primarily used as a practice squad member. The squad altered its roster in preparation for the playoffs, and he was released immediately before Week 18. In 2019, Billy-Johnson was not selected in the NFL Draft and was signed by multiple clubs, including the Texans, Chargers, Jaguars, Panthers, Bills, 49ers, Bengals, and Raiders. Throughout his 26 professional games, he has caught 20 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns with the Chargers in 2020, which was his best performance.
The 28-year-old enters a top-heavy wide receiver group that could see open battle for the final spot throughout training camp. The top three positions are guaranteed for CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Jalen Tolbert, barring another addition. After showing promise as a rookie, 2023 seventh-round pick Jalen Brooks appears to have a clear road to the team. However, the competition for WR4 and WR5 may feature as many as six players: Brooks, Martavis Bryant, 2024 sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Cropper, David Durden, and Billy-Johnson.
It’s not like that group gives you much confidence, does it? In light of this, the Cowboys ought to investigate the wide receiver market after the draft. It remains to be seen if Tolbert is prepared to take on a more significant role, and Michael Gallup has committed to the Raiders, so he won’t be returning.
